June, 1960 – Roger Summit was hired by Lockheed
1962
10/1/1962 – Don Schaaf came to Lockheed in 1962 with a BS in accounting from the University of Colorado, an MS in finance from San Jose State, 3 years of computer programming courses while a systems analyst at IBM, experience as a journeyman carpenter while in school, and construction training in the U.S. Marine Corp. LMSC first put him to work as a supervisor in Accounting, and then moved him to R&D Budget and Estimating for Financial Operations. After 2 years in LMSC’s Management Training program, he found himself in the Information Sciences lab, running computers for DIALOG and Jetplan (now called Dataplan, LMSC’s latest spinoff). Jan-71 – Bob Donati becomes first full-time marketing person assigned to DIALOG. (Monolog,v1i2)

5/15/1972 – Gordon Schick joins Dialog. (Monolog,v2i6)
1973
Aug-73 – Rick Caputo assigned to DIALOG. (Monolog,v1i2)
Aug-73 – Rick Caputo became a consultant to DIALOG in Washington. (Monolog,v3i7)
8/15/1973 – Geoff Sharp joins DIALOG with an undergraduate degree from SF State, and MS in Mathematics from San Jose State, and about 7 yrs experience in commercial data processing. Immediately before coming to DIALOG, he was on the road with the Woody Herman band as a trombonist. During 1972-1973, he and he band toured 45 states in 9 months, doing mostly one-nighters, and the band also cut a Grammy award-winning record, Giant Steps, that year. Geoff has also plaed with the Oakland Raiders marching band and with Elvis Presley. (Monolog,v3i6)
9/28/1973 – Dick Stephan joined LMSC. (Monolog,v3i7)
Oct-73 – When Rick Caputo came to DIALOG the entire field staff consisted of himself and Bob Donati; Bob specialized in marketing and Rick in training. Their territory was everything east of the Rockies, including Canada. Mark Bayer later joined Rick in the Washington office. (Monolog,v3i7)
10/23/1973 – Rick Caputo joins DIALOG. Rick became involved in online information retrieval in 1968, wen he went to work for Data Corporation, which was soon acquired by the Mead Paper Company. Rick handled marketing, database acquisition, customer services, and training for Mead until 1971, when he went to the American Psychological Association to work on the automation of Psychological Abstracts. In August 1973 Rick became a consultant to DIALOG in Washington, and in October 1973, he joined the staff. (Monolog,v3i7)

1975
1/1/1975 – Rosalie Black joined DIALOG as an administrator. There were about 35 people on staff. She set up international agreements through LMSC’s Legal Department, handled salary administration, professional services agreements, facilities and assisted JetPlan (now DataPlan) with their administrative requirements (the two groups were very close then, since they shared a computer). Rosalie was the HR representative on the DIALOG spinoff team, and established the HR organization and its programs at DIALOG. (Monolog,v3i7)
1976
Mar-76 – Jackie Webb joins as a part time employee. Her job then was to mail the CHRONOLOG: the job took a week each month. Some time later, she was given the task of cataloging about 2 years’ worth of database source tapes before shipping them to the warehouse. (Monolog,v3i6)
Jul-76 – Rick Caputo went to UPDATE in Chicago in July 1976, and met the “voice of DIALOG” on the then-new 800 number: Anne Hubbard, who had been at DIALOG since January of that year. Thus began their courtship. On July 15, 1977, a year to the day after they met at UPDATE, he and Anne were married in California, with RKS their best man. They drove back to Washington in Anne’s 1968 VW, which they still own. (Monolog,v3i7)

Mar-77 – Joe DiSalvo joins to open the Chicago office. (Monolog,v1i3)
3/28/1977 – Joyce Hoskinson hired by Tom Crawford through Charlie Bourne’s introduction. (Monolog,v2i6)
4/11/1977 – Mary Grush joins Customer Services, transfers to Operations after a year and a half. (Monolog,v2i6)
6/18/1977 – Charlie Bourne joins Dialog from Berkeley, where for 6 yrs he was Professor of Library and Information Sciences and Director of the Institute of Library Research. (Monolog,v2i6)
8/22/1977 – Betty Davis joined Dialog from Univ of NC at Chapel Hill, where she was head of the Math, Physics, and Chemical Libraries. She had attended Rick Caputo’s very first training session in Washington, DC. (Monolog,v2i8)
Oct-77 – Steve Wilson began in Operations, where he was responsible for 55 files and was the only swing shift operator; he had to bring DIALOG down, install the updates, bring DIALOG back up again, and answer the phone, all by himself. (Monolog,v2i9)
10/7/1977 – Steve Wilson joined after getting his BS in math from UC Santa Barbara and loafing for the summer. (Monolog,v2i9)
1978
Jan-78 – Bob Donati designated Eastern Regional Manager. (Monolog,v1i2)
1/23/1978 – John Miksad joined Lockheed Center for Marine Research (now known as Lockheed Environmental Research), transferred to LMSC in the summer of 1980, transferred to DIALOG in May 1981. (Monolog,v3i1)
2/13/1978 – Carol Wilson joins Customer Services Department, just a month out of library school at UC Berkeley; had completed Barbara Anderson’s Computer-Assisted Reference course at Berkeley. Was the first social science/humanities specialist in Customer Services and developed the first Social Sciences Seminar. (Monolog,v3i2)
3/15/1978 – Sherri Roberts joins as permanent employee after 14 months in Dick Stephan’s area for 14 months. Previously worked for the head of the Clinical Pathology Dept at the University of Oregon Medical School, where she searched every issue of Excerpta Medica by hand for articles of interest to the staff there. Sherri continued in Customer Administration until December 1979, when she transferred to Electronic Printing, where she ran the Xerox 9700 printer with Jackie Webb, and took over the 9700 when Jackie transferred to Operations. 8/7/1978 – Jackie Webb hired by Dan Pritchard to fun the new Xerox 1200 to produce offline PRINTs and also to manage the tape library. (Monolog,v3i6)
9/6/1978 – Sophie Hudnut joins. BS and MS degrees in Chemistry from Arizona State University. MLS from UCLA and had worked as a literature research analyst in corporate libraries. After retirement to motherhood in 1971, she took night courses in business and did parttime literature searches for the Naval Weapons Center at China Lake, where she was introduced to DIALOG in 1977. She was hired by Tom Crawford. She started on the day after Labor Day, replacing Ron Kaminecki, who was transferring to the Chicago office. (Monolog,v3i7)
9/29/1978 – Sandy Mar starts with Lockheed as parttime receptionist in the Medical department in Sunnyvale, then came to DIALOG’s Customer Administration organization in September 1979. (Monolog,v3i7)

Jun-79 – When Joyce Hoskinson opened the Houston office, Sophie Hudnut became the training scheduler, and between June and September, Sophie and Carol Wilson were the only trainers in the Palo Alto office. (Monolog,v3i7)
8/14/1979 – Carol Wilson moves from Customer Services to Publications. (Monolog,v3i2)
Oct-79 – Steve Wilson became a programmer, first writing conversion programs and later display tables (formatters). He automated the latter process before turning it over to Mike Barbarino earlier in 1982. (Monolog,v2i9)
Oct-79 – Art Kealy assigned as DIALOG’s financial member, after working on budgets and forecasts for Lockheed Missiles Systems Division. Art was the only finance person until Dave Shatswell was loaned to DIALOG in Feb-81. (Monolog,v3i5)

Jun-80 – Bonnie Snow joins Rick and Anne Caputo in the Washington office as a replacement for Mark Bayer, who left in 1979. (Monolog,v3i7)
6/6/1980 – Carol Wilson and others in Publications spend 6 months revising all the database documentation chapters (before days of VM Script). Keying all those Bluesheets and chapters was “sheer agony.” (Monolog,v3i2)

Jul-82 – James Dullaghan is Dialog’s Summer Student Coop Program participant, working in Operations for 3 months, currently junior at Cal State Hayward, majoring in Information Systems. (Monolog,v2i7)
Jul-82 – Mike Barbarino of Online Systems Development profiled as creator of weird and wonderful sculptures. He constructs them out of papier mache, modeled on a base of rolled-up newspapers, clay or wire. When they dry, they are sanded, painted, and varnished. He couldn’t afford to buy art, so he decided to create his own. (Monolog,v2i7)
Jul-82 – Patti Sakauye received an Order Form A from a new user who stated, in the “Additional Information” space, “I am 57, 6′ tall, gray and slightly balding. I like basketball, strawberries, and other things too numerous to mention.” (Monolog,v2i7)
Jul-82 – Penny Coppernoll-Black received a call on the 800 line from a woman who said she needed information quickly – she had been bitten by her python and was concerned that might have rabies.
