Moves & Mergers

Then there were all our moves and mergers:

  • Dialog absorbed VuText in 1989(?)
  • Dialog acquired DataStar in March 1993
  • On January 1, 1995, we moved from three locations in Palo Alto into 2440 El Camino in Mountain View (filling all seven floors!).
  • Dialog acquired Info on Demand in 1995(?) (what other pieces went into building the document delivery business?)
  • Dialog acquired CARL in 1996(?)
  • Marketing, customer service, finance, and HR functions were consolidated to the new company headquarters in Cary, NC at the end of 1998, leaving mainly software engineering and content development in California.
  • Dialog and DataStar computer operations were migrated to the Thomson data center in Eagan, MN in summer 2004. Data Center brought down on Friday June 25; a flurry of disconnecting the disk drives from the mainframe hardware, then packing them into big-rig trailers; then shipping them to Eagan, where they were installed/tested/verified and all was brought back online Sunday the 27th.
  • The California technology contingent moved from Mountain View to California Avenue in Sunnyvale on January 1, 2005.
  • Dialog and DataStar software engineering was outsourced to IBM between Nov 2006 and May 2007.  Content development (and re-badged employees) remain in Sunnyvale.
  • The DataStar office was closed at the end of 2007.
  • Layoff (er RIF) announcements: Feb 11, 2003; Feb 2, 2005; Apr 25, 2006 (outsource decision announced)
  • Actual Layoff (er RIF): Mar 30, 2007 (technology department outsourced)
